The Complete Book of Florence Ceramics
by Barbara S. Kline
The Florence Ceramics Company of Pasadena, California, produced historical and literary figurines, birds, animals, figural pairs, and an extensive line of artware from the early 1940s to 1964. This wonderfully illustrated book identifies them all. Ceramic enthusiasts will enjoy the history of how company founder Florence Ward got her start in the ceramics business and how she researched the designs and period costumes of the figurines. Also included is a discussion of how the wares were produced, patent descriptions related to molding and manufacturing techniques, and interviews with family members and former employees.
About Florence Ceramics:
Florence Ceramics was featured in the 2016 exhibition, Cast & Fired: Pasadena’s Mid-Century Ceramics Industry. The company, which operated from 1942-1964, produced a selection of home products, but is best known for the “Florence Collection,” authentic, detailed reproductions of historical and fictional characters, including figures from two well-known paintings at the Huntington Library—Thomas Lawrence’s Sarah Barrett Moulton: Pinkie and Thomas Gainsborough’s The Blue Boy. Florence also drew inspiration from Godey’s Ladies Book. She often produced figurines embellished with slip-coated lace, which burned away during the firing leaving the delicate ceramic replica. Delicately articulated fingers were another defining feature of Florence Ceramics figurines, and twenty-two karat gold accents provided the final touches.
