February 7, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
$15 – $20Henry Mercer (1856 – 1930) began making tile in 1898. His tilework, like that of Ernest Batchelder, was installed in private homes and public buildings from coast to coast. In California, Mercer’s tilework was used by the architects Bertram Goodhue, Irving Gill, and William Lee Woollett. Presenter Farley Tobin is a ceramic artist and tilemaker. She worked as an apprentice in 1975 at the Moravian Pottery and Tileworks after graduating from the New York State College of Ceramics in Alfred, NY and has been fascinated by Henry Mercer’s life and design approach ever since. Her presentation will focus on Henry Mercer’s designs and architectural installations touching briefly on Mercer’s influence on her own artwork and on Batchelder’s work.
