PBS producer Todd Mason will discuss the dramatic personal and professional struggle of Caltech visionary George Ellery Hale to build the Yerkes, Mount Wilson, and Palomar observatories, each the largest in the world in their day. Also mentioned will be Hale’s other accomplishments and overarching goal to create “an American science.” The talk will include clips from his film, The Journey to Palomar, and a brief discussion of future giant telescopes being constructed to extend Hale’s quest to “unravel the secrets of the stars.” This program will be held at the Beckman Institute at Caltech.
